This little community, founded in 1884, contains a most unusual statue. It is the Boll Weevil Monument, erected in 1919 to commemorate the earlier destruction of cotton crops by the boll weevil. After the cotton was wiped out, corn, peanuts, potatoes and sugar cane were introduced and brought the area renewed prosperity.
