Detectives are following up on leads generated in the shooting early Tuesday of a Utah Highway Patrol trooper on I-215 in the south end of Davis County.

Sheriff's Capt. Bud Cox said they've received numerous tips in the shooting at 3:38 a.m. of trooper Michael J. Leitch, 26, who was wounded in the hand.Anyone who may have been driving along I-215 in the Redwood Road-Jordan River area near the Salt Lake-Davis county border and who may have seen the suspect vehicle is asked to contact the Davis sheriff's department, 451-4100.

Detectives are checking out some telephone tips they received after the shooting, Cox said, and are trying to track down the suspect vehicle, described as an older model, dark-colored Camaro or Firebird, with primer paint patches and a temporary registration sticker.

Leitch, 26, stopped to check out the vehicle, which was parked off the side of the highway on the Jordan River overpass, with its hood up. Two people were with the car, one a woman passenger standing outside and the driver, who was working under the hood.

When Leitch approached the car, the man came around and pulled out a .22-caliber rifle. He fired 12 shots, which hit the trooper's car, portable radio and clothing.

Leitch was wounded in one hand when he was wrestling with the suspect, trying to get the rifle away from him, according to detectives. After the shooting, the suspects jumped into the car and fled, driving south toward Salt Lake City.

The male suspect is described as 6 feet tall, 200 pounds, with dark curly hair and a dark complexion; the woman is described as young with long, dark hair.
