Judges in the Marshall Islands have awarded compensation of more than $14 million to victims of American nuclear tests on the central Pacific island nation 40 years ago.

Almost 5,000 Marshall Islanders have asked the Nuclear Claims Tribunal for compensation, said James Plasman, acting chairman of the tribunal. He said 379 have been awarded it.The tribunal, an independent body with a $45 million fund from Washington, is paying compensation for illnesses presumed to have been caused by radiation exposure.
