Cast a lure or sink a worm . . . whatever your preference go out and try it soon because some of the year's best fishing is now.

Winter carryovers are still cruising the shallower areas of lakes and reservoirs looking for food. Later on, when it's warmer, they'll head for deeper waters and away from an easy cast from the shore.Light snow this past winter and warmer spring temperatures have also helped by keeping streams from running high and brown, which has helped keep fishing better for a longer time.

Add to this the movement of hatchery trucks in recent weeks, transporting thousands of catchable fish to some of the more popular waters. In most cases they're not the biggest fish in Utah - six to 10 inches, generally - but they're fun to catch and do make a tasty meal.

The question, of course, is where to go?

Most all of the popular spots - East Canyon, Lost Creek, Mill Hollow, Smith and Morehouse, Tibble Fork, Palisade, Cleveland, Miller's Flat and the lakes along Highway 150 through the Uintas - have received fish this year, and will continue to get periodically offerings throughout the summer.

Good fishing is still being reports on many of the running waters, like Blacksmith Fork, Ogden River, Logan River and Provo River.

For more of a wilderness experience, consider hiking off the highways and visiting one of the less fished lakes in the Uintas. These lakes in June and July offers excellent fly fishing opportunities.

Old standbys are continuing to put out fish. Strawberry, for example, on a fast and healthy comeback, has been giving up some very nice rainbow and cutthroat in the 20-inch range. The fish here are fat and healthy because of an overabundance of food.

The larger smallmouth bass are still taking lures along the shorelines of Flaming Gorge. In deeper waters fishermen are catching some rainbow, kokanee and lake trout.

Fishermen are also picking up some tiger musky at Pineview and the walleye fishing at Starvation has been excellent in the early morning and late evening.
