A Vietnamese mother carrying her child weeps as police push her and 37 other boat people onto a Hercules C-130 in Hong Kong to be deported to their homeland. At least five resisted in the first deportation of longtime residents of the squalid refugee camps. Radio Hong Kong reported one of the men was arrested upon arrival in Hanoi, apparently in connection with a burglary committed two years ago before he fled. The radio also said Vietnamese authorities seized film from two journalists who photographed the arrest. Hong Kong hopes to empty its nine camps in three years.
