City Council member David Soelberg has been appointed mayor to fill the unexpired term of John Stewart, who resigned two weeks ago after being convicted of lewdness.

The council's decision was unanimous Thursday night after a short discussion.Soelberg has been mayor pro tem for the past three years and was acting as mayor until the council could appoint someone to replace Stewart. A year and a half remains in the mayoral term.

Soelberg, 37, was elected to the council six years ago. He is an accountant for Thiokol Corp.

Of his new position, he said, "I'm excited. We are in the middle of a big project (sewer installation) that I'd like to see through. I'd like to see the city keep going in the direction it is going. There have been some improvements that made it a nicer place to live. We have made a lot of progress since its incorporation."

Although Soelberg grew up in Pleasant View, he said he spent a "goodly number of hours down here while growing up."
