Other American items created before the turn of the century include the safety pin, which was patented in 1849; earmuffs, invented in 1873; barbed wire, invented in 1874, and the corncob pipe, invented in 1869.Also the rolltop desk, in 1850; golf tees, 1899; ice cream sundaes, 1897; chop suey, 1896; and the electric chair, first used for an execution in 1890 at Auburn, N.Y.
