A cool dip in any body of water on a sweltering day is very inviting - but it also can be a killer. Drowning is the fourth-leading cause of accidental death - claiming the lives of 5,000 Americans each year.

The National Safety Council encourages swimmers of all ages to stay in areas supervised by a lifeguard. Never swim alone. Most drownings occur when people enter the water unintentionally by tripping or being pushed from a dock, deck or boat. Do not run or roughhouse around water. And never dive into unfamiliar water.

Be a responsible swimmer or boater, and never drink alcohol in or around water, the council advises.
