Although Salt Lake City didn't win the bid to host the 1998 Winter Olympic Games, the bid book that went to the International Olympic Committee won several gold medals in regional and national competition.
The January/February 1992 issue of Graphic Design, an international magazine of design and communications, presented the bid book and the advertising firm of Penna Powers Cutting & Haynes Inc. the annual award. Also, the firm received a "best of show" award during the Utah advertising awards event.Then, the bid book won the "best of show" award at the regional Addy Award and Golden Spike Awards, a regional public relations competition.
PPC&H received the bid to produce the book in 1990 and formed a bid book team using a number of Utah photographers, illustrators, writers and printers.
Encased in a hand-sculptured wooden slip case and saddle leather carrying bag, the book was delivered to 95 IOC members. The cover page was handmade and scented with Utah pine needles.
