Kellogg's is going to give Grape-Nuts a run for the money with the new cereal, "Nutri-Grain Nuggets." Blazoned across the box is the slogan "Taste Beats Grape-Nuts 2 to 1." The 20.1-ounce box of cereal, with no added sugar or preservatives, retails for $2.79.

Don Russell: "This cereal would be a favorite among cereal purists. Nutri-Grain's ingredients are simply wheat and barley flour, dates, salt and yeast. Sure, it's similar to Grape-Nuts, but this new cereal has more of a malted taste. We enjoyed this cereal best when we added fruit, yogurt and other compatible cold cereals."Nihla Lake: "These little nuggets were too hard for my teeth, so I had my husband try them. He said they had a nuttier taste than the other brand, but don't fill your bowl too full or they get a little soggy before you're through. They were pretty good although the kids won't eat them because they look like they might be good for you."

Judy Slack Wilson: "I'm not a bran-bud fan. The Nuggets sure tasted to me like they had a funny aftertaste. I'm probably not a very good judge of this cereal because we don't eat bran cereals. I won't be buying these again."

Edyth Jensen: "Our family has tried these before and have enjoyed them. They aren't quite as hard as the other brand, but they are OK."

Linda C. Tingey: "I switched over! I'm going to change from Post Grape-nuts. These are not as hard and I like the taste of Nuggets better; they don't have that malty taste."

Rich Firmage: "I didn't like the Nutri-Grain Nuggets at all. It tasted so bland I couldn't even eat a whole bowl. After about four bites I threw it out."

Conclusion: Our panel was all over the taste-map. Two really liked the Nuggets, two thought they were ok, and two adamantly disliked the new cereal. Odds are, you have a pretty good chance of liking these little nuggets. The Deseret News testing panel independently tests products purchased by the Deseret News.
