Police in New Zealand discovered the mutilated bodies of seven family members, and a 25-year-old man was charged with murder Saturday in the grisly killing spree.

The dead included five children ranging in age from 2 to 13, a pregnant woman and a man, all of whom were related, investigators said. All had been bludgeoned or stabbed to death.The victims were found in various rooms of a house in suburban Masterton, population 20,000, 60 miles north of Wellington. Police said they went to the house to investgate what at first appeared to be a routine domestic argument.

Raymond Ratima, who is unemployed, was arrested and charged with murder, police said.
