Salt Lake police detectives and the Salt Lake Area Gang Project are investigating a drive-by shooting that occurred early Saturday.

According to a police report, someone in a gray Monte Carlo fired three shots at a group of youths in a red pickup truck while driving side-by-side on 600 North. Two police officers were stopped at the intersection of 600 North and 900 West at 1:45 a.m. and saw "three slight flashes of light" coming from the driver's side of the Monte Carlo, which raced away when the police began pursuit, reaching speeds of about 60 mph.

The car finally pulled over at 950 N. 935 West. The 16-year-old driver told officers he had thrown firecrackers at the pickup, the police report said.

However, investigators later found a .22-caliber revolver with three spent rounds one block from where the Monte Carlo was stopped.
