Salt Lake Board of Education

- Renewed the contract of Superintendent John W. Bennion for two years. Salary and benefits are still being negotiated.- Approved Badham Construction Co. to build a new library and install air conditioning at Edison Elementary School, 466 Cheyenne St. Construction will begin next week on the $320,801 project; completion is expected by Oct. 1.

- Agreed to ask the Utah High School Activities Association to reconsider its placement of Highland High School in the 5A classification. Clark Campbell of the district's Enrollment Committee said proposed enrollment caps for Highland will make it one of the state's smallest 5A schools.

- Heard a request to boost the budget of the districtwide English as a Second Language Program from $242,164 to $348,169. ESL representatives said the high school program, located at Highland, needs two additional teachers, a counselor and other aides to serve 225 students. They also asked that Highland be declared at full capacity and that no new out-of-district students be allowed to enroll in Highland's ESL or regular classes.

- Learned that Salt Lake School District was selected to be one of 10 urban school districts for the National School Reform Network. The network plans to develop a national platform for urban school reform.

American Towers

RDA: RDA representatives Alice Steiner and Dick Turpin will discuss Block 57, Block 49 and the Salt Palace with the American Towers Community Council.

Slow down 900 East: Residents are circulating a petition to slow down motorists on 900 East. The East Central Community Council will discuss the subject.

Jordan Meadows

Special Election: The Jordan Meadows Community Council will hold a special election for secretary.

Shopping carts: Residents are complaining about shopping carts in the neighborhood. They will ask Smith's for suggestions on solutions at the State Fairpark Community Council meeting.

West Central City

Derks Field: The People's Freeway Community Council will review the proposed Derks Field area housing plan.

Elections: The Greater Rose Park Community Council will hold elections and discuss activities at Northwest Multipurpose Center.
