Juab County commissioners agreed to put up $5,700 to help provide signal lights with gates and street lighting at the railroad crossing in west Mona.
The crossing is located on a county road from Mona to Goshen by leaving west Mona, traveling around Mona Reservoir and through Goshen canyon.Council member Darlene Fowkes said she has worked to get the crossing fitted with safety devices for a year now. Union Pacific Railroad is willing to make the improvements.
"The preliminary estimate for these improvements would be approximately $85,000," said James C. Nelson, engineering coordinator of utilities and railroads for the Utah Department of Transportation.
The county and city would be expected to participate by providing 6.67 percent of the amount, Nelson said.
"If Mona city elects not to provide the matching funds, the federal railroad safety funds cannot be used on the project and it will not be built," he said.
funds are available through the Utah Department of Transportation.
