Philip Dunne, a screenwriter and director of such films as "How Green Was My Valley" and a liberal activist who battled the blacklisting tactics of congressional witchhunters, has died, the Writers Guild of America said Wednesday. He was 84.

Mr. Dunne died Tuesday at his Malibu home after a long bout with cancer.He wrote 36 movies and directed 10 during the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood. His credits include "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," "The Count of Monte Cristo," "Suez," "Ten North Frederick" and "David and Bathsheba."

Mr. Dunne was a founder of the Screen Writers Guild, precursor of the Writers Guild of America.

He was nominated for the Academy Award for screenwriting twice and just a week ago received a Writers Guild Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
