A South Salt Lake man was ordered to serve 30 days in jail and 18 months' probation in connection with the death of a Salt Lake man more than a year ago.

Patrick D. Erney, 21, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Tuesday. He had been charged with vehicle homicide, a third-degree felony, for the April 21, 1991, death of Chris R. Bidwell, 19.Erney was driving down Big Cottonwood Canyon early that morning when he lost control of the car while rounding a curve and collided with a vehicle driven by Val Johnson, 48. Bidwell, a passenger in Erney's car, was thrown from the vehicle and died six hours later at a hospital.

Court documents indicate Erney admitted he had taken pain killers and had been drinking earlier. A blood test indicated his blood-alcohol content was 0.19 percent ethanol.
