The controversy over Dan Quayle's remarks concerning American values has spread into Utah politics.

Ted Stewart, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, commented on speeches by Utah Democratic Party Chairman Peter Billings and attorney general candidate Jan Graham."When the chairman of the Utah Democratic Party attacks Vice President Dan Quayle for voicing concern about the decline of families and family values in America, it proves that Democrats, even Utah Democrats, are in left field when it comes to understanding what is wrong in America."

Stewart said that Billings held the Republicans responsible for blaming the nationwide riots on fictional TV character Murphy Brown.

Moreover, he also reacted to Graham's comment that, if she were a baby, she would rather be born to single mother Murphy Brown than to Dan Quayle.

"Her speech tells me that Jan Graham no more represents the values of the people of Utah than Murphy Brown represents the values of the majority of this country," Stewart said.
