Muslim extremists in Cairo, Egypt, have slain one of their most relentless critics, a respected writer, in what one newspaper called the beginning of a campaign to kill prominent secularists.

Farag Fouda was struck by machine-gun fire as he came out of his office Monday evening with his son Ahmed and a friend, Wahid Raafat, the Interior Ministry said. The assassins were two men on a motorcycle.
