A Davis County Jail inmate under evaluation at the Utah State Hospital was nearly drowned Sunday evening by two other patients, police said.

Duane Gallegos, 21, was treated at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center after two men assaulted him and held his head in a bathtub full of water about 5:10 p.m., said Police Capt. Duane Fraser.Fraser said Gallegos was referred from the jail to the hospital's forensic unit for a 30-day mental examination. Fraser said police aren't sure what led to the assault. The incident remains under investigation.

Keith Mills, 25, and Adrian Hickey, 19, were arrested in connection with the assault. They were booked into the Utah County Jail.
