To the editor:
Certain segments of our society, especially those who are connected with sports, seem to get "the cake," and those who really need help from tax dollars get "the crumbs."For example: The horse business is mostly privately owned. Why should the state subsidize that hobby? That is not fair, and the money thus spent could go a long way to improve our schools, provide job training for young people, etc.
Also, the money that is being spent to promote the Olympic Games is another example of spending tax dollars for the benefit of a special few. Our elected officials are not listening to the majority of our citizens but are going ahead with plans to suit them and the promoters.
How can anyone with a conscience spend that kind of money on those kinds of things when many of our people are homeless and struggle each day just to exist? They also must surely know that many little children in this state go to bed hungry.
Did we really and truly need the Delta Center? And what right does Mr. Miller have to say what should or should not take place in the Salt Palace? Now the Salt Palace is coming down at a terrible loss.
The unfinished housing complex on 300 South and 300 West is another example of our public officials' waste. I am completely opposed to putting a skating oval there and a ball park across the street. Please leave Derks Field where it is and rebuild it if necessary.
I'm sure the Greek community would rather see a housing unit on that block than a skating oval, which would detract from their beautiful church. And please, do not tear up Pioneer Park. People need that park, not another ball field.
Has anyone considered the parking aspect of what is being proposed? There is not adequate parking for the Delta Center, let alone more such facilities.
It is time our public officials get their thinking and priorities straightened out and quit catering to a few. The taxpayers cannot afford the present proposals.
