To the editor:

A recent letter to the editor makes some good points in favor of short terms for politicians. However, the concept of term limitations by law scares me, as it would arbitrarily limit our freedom of choice. The reserve of possible public servants would be sharply depleted, and it is hard enough now to find two good men to run for president. If we get someone in Washington who both understands our needs and is effective in pursuing them, the law would automatically vote him or her out, leaving us to choose blindly among new and possibly incompetent unknowns, with no previous record to vote for or against. Unless their past activities were well defined and well known, we would have to judge by who is best at mouthing platitudes.

Under term limitation, half of our representatives would be "lame ducks," with no accountability, no need to face the voters with their actions.

I trust that most people are intelligent enough to know when an incumbent has outlived his or her usefulness without having a law to make the decision in advance.
