A helicopter attempts to drop water on a forest fire about eight miles east of Skykomish, Wash., Monday. The fire, which officials believe was started by sparks from a railroad track maintenance vehicle, has burned about 250 acres since it began Saturday. On Tuesday, firefighters in Oregon continued to battle two wildfires that destroyed five houses and forced scores of people from their homes overnight. The Oregon fires burned near Sisters at Sage Flat, about 80 miles southeast of Portland, and near Haner Butte, 10 miles west of La Pine. A 2,240-acre fire on the Yakima Indian Reservation in south-central Washington destroyed six homes, including two mobile homes, before it was contained late Sunday.
