According to the Deseret News, Utah taxpayers have spent more than $700,000 in legal fees defending the state's abortion law. The governor and his anti-abortion allies feel that this money was not wasted because "you never lose when you do what's right."
In fact, however, the entire defense of the abortion law has been an unnecessary waste of limited taxpayer resources. Any sensible approach to this case would have included handling the case in-house by the state's attorney general and waiting for the Supreme Court's decision in the Pennsylvania case.At a time of stress in our state's schools, this money represented the construction of a badly needed elementary school rather than financing the operations of a new law firm.G.
