FIREFIGHTER DIES DEFENDING OWL'S HABITAT

A firefighter was killed Monday while battling a forest fire threatening the habitat of the endangered northern spotted owl.

Elsewhere, California fire crews pressed a ground attack on an 8,765-acre timber fire that had burned for nearly two weeks. Crews in Idaho mopped up after subduing a smaller fire.The Oregon firefighter died while digging a firebreak in Willamette National Forest, said Mary Ellen Holly, a Forest Service spokeswoman. Investigators were trying to determine the circumstances of the death.

The 760-acre fire broke out Saturday a few miles east of Oakridge, about 30 miles southeast of Eugene in west-central Oregon.

In Utah, firefighters tackled a 450-acre wildfire in the Deep Creek Mountains along the Utah-Nevada border. Heavy rain Sunday helped subdue the blaze.
