DE KLERK WANTS TALKS WITH ANC LEADERSHIP

South African President Frederik de Klerk has called for an urgent meeting with the African National Congress leadership and said he accepted that talks on establishing full democracy could only resume once the level of violence in the country had been reduced.

The call for the meeting Wednesday came two days after black homeland soldiers fired into a crowd of 20,000 ANC supporters, killing 28 people and wounding another 196 as they marched to demand the resignation of the Ciskei homeland's military leader.
