HURRICANE INIKI CHURNS TOWARD HAWAII

Hurricane Iniki churned Friday toward Hawaii's northern islands with winds gusting to 155 mph. Forecasters said it could whip up hurricane-force winds tonight on Oahu Island, where Honolulu is located.

Iniki, with sustained winds of 125 mph, turned Thursday and headed toward the islands of Kauai and Niihau on a course that would take it tonight over a 25-mile-wide channel separating the islands.Public schools on Kauai were ordered closed Friday. Civil defense officials on Oahu recommended that classes be canceled.
