`BATMAN' ACTOR SAYS FILM WAS TOO VIOLENT FOR KIDS

Veteran actor Pat Hingle, who played police Commissioner James Gordon in "Batman" and "Batman Returns," says he knows why the sequel didn't do as well as the first film.

" `Batman Returns' was too gross and violent for children," said Hingle, who was interviewed at McCarter Theatre in Princeton, N.J., while rehearsing for his role as Big Daddy in "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" with JoBeth Williams."It wasn't the kind of movie you could take your kids to," he said. "But I did enjoy working with Tim Burton and Michael Keaton. I'm not sure about a sequel since this didn't do as well."
