Almost everyone agrees that political advertising is needlessly overdone. And almost everyone agrees that politicians need to do something about the national debt, state and local tax burdens or some other financial woe. So here is a suggestion for lawmakers:
Pass legislation requiring all national candidates and their financial supporters to contribute the same amount to payment on the national debt that they spend on advertising. (State and local candidates contribute to state and local tax relief.)Even though this might put only a dent in the debt, it would at least provide us with candidates who are giving more than lip service to the problem.
No candidate would be more disadvantaged than he or she otherwise would have been, and it would also cut the political litter in half. The candidates would police each other, and violators could be required to pay 10 times the amount they withheld.
