TEACHERS NOTE INCREASE IN SICK, DISTURBED KIDS

Teachers say an increasing number of children are showing up too sick or disturbed to do well in grade school.

According to a study released Tuesday, about 64 percent of the elementary school teachers surveyed for the National PTA and the American Academy of Pediatrics said they are seeing more students with health problems now than in the past. Only 5 percent said they are seeing fewer health problems.Ninety-four percent of the teachers said that overall health and fitness are very important to a child's school performance, while 6 percent said they are only somewhat important.

The ability to concentrate was cited by 66 percent as the aspect of school performance most harmed by poor health.
