It may have just been the second match of the league season, but Skyline took a big step toward defending their Region 2 championship Tuesday night against Alta. The Eagles downed the Hawks in three games, 15-6, 13-15, 15-13.

"It was a tough match," Skyline coach Joan Burdett said. "Either team could have taken over a run with it."Burdett said consistent serving was a key to her team's victory. The Eagles made only three service errors all match. Lori Gardner led Skyline with seven kills. Alta's Laura Golding had a strong match in defeat.

Top-ranked Skyline, which went 12-0 last year in the region, is now 2-0 in this young season, while the Hawks fell to 1-1.

Region 1

Clearfield def. Viewmont

At Clearfield, Brandi Reynolds led the Falcons over the Vikings, 15-9, 15-8, with 11 assists, four kills and one block. Natalie Hoskins also had a fine match for Clearfield with nine kills and 13 service points. The Falcons are now 1-1, while Viewmont dropped to 0-2.

Layton def. Bonneville

At Layton, Hilary King had seven kills and eight blocks to lead the Lancers to a three-game victory over Bonneville, 15-12, 6-15, 15-10. Layton is now 2-0 in region play, while the Lakers fall to 1-1. Ele Brimhall had 10 assists and four blocks and Beth McCormick had six kills for Laytonn.

Weber def. Roy

At Roy, the fifth-ranked Warriors upped their record in the region to 2-0 with a 15-8, 17-15 vicotory over the winless (0-2) Royals.

Davis def. Northridge

At Davis, the Darts downed the Knights 15-4, 15-6. Amy Brunnette had nine service points, Regan Taylor added 13 assists and Branda Barton slammed eight kills to lead Davis.

Region 2

Cottonwood def. Olympus

At Cottonwood, the Colts downed the Titans 15-10, 15-8. Cottonwood (2-0) was led by Keri Bennett with 21 kills, while Cindy Christensen added eight service points.

Region 3

Bingham def. Hunter

At Hunter, the defending 4A champs needed three games to beat the Wolverines, 15-11, 14-16, 15-12. Bingham was led by Krissy Applegate's 12 kills, while Andrea Anderson (11 kills), LeAnn Jensen (10 kills) and Jenny Burton (nine kills) also had fine hitting performances. Bingham is now 2-0 in region play, while Hunter fells to 1-1.

Cyprus def. Kearns

At Cyprus, the Pirates beat the Cougars 15-11, 15-6. Kristy Johnstun led Cyprus with 11 kills, while Ali Jensen added four. Both teams are now 1-1.

Taylorsville at Hillcrest

At Hillcrest, the Warriors beat the Huskies in two games 15-4, 15-11. Taylorsville is now 2-0 in the region, while Hillcrest falls to 0-2.

Region 5

Sky View def. Bear River

At Bear River, the Bobcats downed the Bears 15-5, 15-11. Heidi Bryner had seven blocks and Angie Prichett added eight digs for Sky View, while Holly Pincombe had a fine match for Bear River. The Bobcats are now 2-0 in the region, while Bear River dropped to 0-2.

Ben Lomond def. Mountain Crest

At Mountain Crest, the Mustangs won their first region match by beating the Scots 15-8, 15-9. Mandi Fryer had 22 assists for Mountain Crest, while Rachel Hester had nine kills.

Box Elder def. Ogden

At Ogden, Rachel Bryner led the Bees in kills and helped Box Elder maintain their unblemished region record despite a close match. In the first game it seemed the Tigers were in command. Nancy Drew served seven consecutive points, to give the Tigers the lead, but the Bees battled back to win 15-11.

In the second game, it was Ben Lomond's turn for a streak. Melanie Morgan served eight consecutive points to win the second game and sweep the match. Box Elder is now 2-0 while Ogden fell to 0-2 in the region.

Region 6

Bountiful def. Murray

At Bountiful, the Braves beat the Spartans, 15-6, 15-5. Amanda Walton and Jenny Gardner led Bountiful with strong net games. Bountiful is now 3-0 in the region, while Murray is 2-1.

Tooele def. West

At West, the Buffaloes improved to 3-0 on the year with a lopsided victory over the Panthers, 15-0, 15-1. West fell to 1-2 with the loss.

Woods Cross def. Judge

At Judge, Woods Cross overcame a first game loss to take the match, 4-15, 15-9, 15-3. For the Bulldogs, Melissa Miller had three kills and Tiffany Quinn served well, but the effort was not enough to give Judge their first victory.
