A Highland, Utah County, man shot and killed himself Tuesday evening at a downtown Salt Lake check cashing store as an officer questioned him concerning a check-cashing incident.

Police received a call from the Check Mart, 370 S. State, about 4:30 p.m. reporting an attempted forgery. When officers arrived, Jeremy Hall, 21, was sitting in a chair in the lobby, smoking a cigarette.Hall stood and faced an officer, who found a knife while patting him down. The officer's report says that Hall asked what he should do with his cigarette. He then pulled a .22-caliber pistol from his waistband, knelt on the floor and shot himself in the forehead.

Hall was taken to LDS Hospital, where he died at 5:10 p.m.
