7 WOMEN FILLED SENATE SEATS AFTER HUSBANDS DIED

Maryon Allen, D-Ala., appointed June 8, 1978, following the death of her husband, James Allen. Defeated for nomination to the unexpired term, left office Nov. 7, 1978.

- Jocelyn Burdick, D-N.D., appointed this week following the death of her husband, Quentin Burdick. Special election to fill a two-year term must be held by Dec. 7, 1992.- Vera Bushfield, R-S.D., appointed Oct. 6, 1948, following the death of her husband, Harlan Bushfield. Term expired Jan. 2, 1949, and she resigned Dec. 26, 1948.

- Hattie Caraway, D-Ark., appointed Nov. 13, 1931, following the death of her husband, Thaddeus Caraway. Elected Jan. 12, 1932, and re-elected in 1938. Term expired Jan. 2, 1945.

- Muriel Humphrey, D-Minn., appointed Jan. 25, 1978, following the death of her husband, Hubert Humphrey. Did not run in the special election and left office Nov. 7, 1978.

- Rose McConnell Long, D-La., appointed Jan. 31, 1936, following the death of her husband, Huey Long. Elected April 1936 to complete his term, which ended Jan. 2, 1937.

- Maurine Neuberger, D-Ore., elected Nov. 8, 1960, for the balance of the unexpired term of her late husband, Richard Neuberger. Elected in 1961. Term expired Jan. 2, 1967.
