HAM RADIO OPERATORS RELAY SHUTTLE MESSAGE

The Endeavour astronauts temporarily lost ground communications with Cape Canaveral, Fla., for about 15 minutes this morning, but ham radio operators from around the world were there to keep contact with the space shuttle open.

According to Layton ham radio operator Pete Smith, an Australian ham radio operator talked with Endeavour during the outage and was able to rely a message to Canaveral.Smith also said he was one of many ham radio operators who were able to communicate, via digital equipment, with the shuttle shortly after ground communications had been restored.
