PARI-MUTUEL HAS FAILED ELSEWHERE

I have just moved here from Minneapolis. When I hear talk about pari-mutuel betting, I think of Canterbury Downs, the race track set up just south of Minneapolis. It was originally touted as a great money-raiser for state coffers; that's why it was allowed to be built and partially financed by the state.

Today, Canterbury Downs is in disrepair, has had to cut staffing and cannot pay all its taxes and other obligations. It is constantly before the Legislature, hat in hand, asking for tax breaks and additional financing.I, too, think horses are beautiful animals. But when people want to start feeding them greenbacks instead of alfalfa the end result is still the same - you-know-what!
