ISRAELI CALL FOR DELAY IN TALKS PUZZLES SYRIA

Syria's chief negotiator to the Middle East peace talks said Wednesday that his delegation "is a little bit puzzled that we shall waste about one-third" of the present round because of a one-week recess proposed by Israel.

Muwaffiq al-Allaf said, however, that he was hopeful Israel proposed the recess "for good reason" and would return to the negotiating table Sept. 14 with new ideas."We are now a little bit puzzled that we shall waste about one-third of this time, but hopefully for good reasons. If that will bring us some constructive ideas from the Israeli side, then it will not be a wasted time."
