CLOUD OF STEAM LEAVES 3 MILE ISLAND PLANT

The Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Harrisburg, Pa., shut down automatically when operators attempted to remove clams from water pipes, and officials said a cloud of mildly radioactive steam was released into the air.

TMI spokeswoman Mary Wells said the amount of radiation released in Friday's incident was insignificant, but the shutdown was reported to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In March 1979, Unit Two of Three Mile Island, located south of Harrisburg, experienced a near meltdown in the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history.
