- Weber State's men's and women's cross country teams opened the 1992 season Saturday at the Nike/UC- Irvine Cross Country Invitational. The meet took place the the Irvine Regional Park in Orange, California.
On the men's side, Ellazar Herrera of UCLA won the 8,000 meter races with a time of 25:30.0 while New Mexico took team honors by placing two runners in the Top Ten finishers to score 58 points, to edge out UCLA by three points. Weber finished third. The top finisher for Weber State was 1991 All-American Chris Jones who finished 12th with a time of 26:18.4. Other Weber State scorers were Guy Perry (16th, 26:28.7), Duane West (18th, 26:30.6), Frank Fox (33rd, 27:10.6) and Matt Godfrey (37th, 27:16.9).In the women's 5,000 meter race, Kay Gooch of Oklahoma finished ahead of all runners with a time of 17 40.88. Arkansas took the team title with 38 points by placing five runners in the Top 15 finishers. Weber finished eighth. Weber State's top finisher was junior Cathy Jolley at 27th place with a time of 19:01.81. Other WSU scorers included Kim Hebdon (30th, 19:07.93); Cheryl Hannay (34th, 19:21.42); Denise Spriggs (35th, 19:22.71) and Heather Price (40th, 19:45.55).
