Hercules Inc. has received an $8.5 million Army contract for work that will be done at the aerospace company's Bacchus Works plant in West Valley City.

Hercules will build a pilot plant to test methods of removing, destroying and recycling propellant for solid rocket motors. The technology developed at the plant will be used to dispose of old and obsolete rocket motors in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, a company spokesman said.

The contract will also provide an undetermined number of jobs at Hercules, at a time when jobs have been cut because of declining defense spending.
