A broken right thumb has sidelined Todd Philcox, who took over as Cleveland Browns quarterback when Bernie Kosar was hurt and led the club to its first victory.
The Browns said today that Philcox was out indefinitely, and that Mike Tomczak would be the starter for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.Philcox started his first game last Sunday and led the Browns to a 28-16 victory over the Los Angeles Raiders, throwing for three touchdowns and completing 10 of 20 passes for 220 yards.
The Browns said that Philcox had apparently fractured his thumb early in the second quarter of Sunday's game.
Philcox had been thrust into the spotlight by Kosar's fractured right ankle the previous week. Philcox, a third-year pro, had played only briefly in four games for the Browns last year and once for the Cincinnati Bengals in 1990.
After Kosar's injury, the Browns signed Tomczak, who previously played for the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers.
