Jerry C. Atkin, president and chief executive officer of SkyWest Airlines, has been selected as the entrepreneur of the year by the MountainWest Venture Group. He will be honored during a luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Marriott Hotel.
Dale Richards, group president, said Atkin was selected for his individual leadership and performance along with his numerous contributions to the economic well-being of the state.Founded in 1972, SkyWest, which is based in St. George, became a major connector for Delta Air Lines in 1986 and uses the slo
gan "the Delta connection" in its advertising. SkyWest has 1,400 employees, carried 1.3 million passengers and traveled nearly 251 million revenue passengers miles in the fiscal year ending March 31.
"SkyWest is a classic Utah entrepreneurial story. From the company's incipient stages to its participation with strategic partners-to management's adoption of `quality circle" techniques and the company's declaration of a cash dividend on its stock, the SkyWest story is an excellent depiction of the full investment/harvest cycle," group officials said.
