CANADA COURT ORDERS REHIRING OF JANITOR

A janitor who was fired by a British Columbia school board for refusing to work on his sabbath was ordered rehired Thursday by the Supreme Court of Canada in an important decision for minority rights in the workplace.

Larry Renaud, a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, was fired by the Central Okanagan School District in Kelowna in 1985 after his union opposed the school board's efforts to create a special shift for him, and the board refused to risk a union grievance.
