DE KLERK, MANDELA WILL TRY TO RESTART TALKS

South African President F.W. de Klerk and ANC leader Nelson Mandela will meet Saturday in a bid to restart black-white negotiations that collapsed three months ago, officials said Friday.

A de Klerk-Mandela summit is seen as an important step in easing the country's political crisis, which has been characterized by bitter rhetoric and escalating violence in black townships. In addition, de Klerk said his government would release an unspecified number of black activists convicted of politically motivated crimes.
