JEW MEMORIAL IS BURNED AT EX-NAZI CAMP

The "Jewish Barracks" at the Sachsenhausen Nazi concentration camp was gutted Saturday in an early morning fire that police and political leaders said was likely arson.

Police assigned a political crimes unit to investigate the burning of the barracks, which is the third Berlin-area memorial to Jews killed in the Holocaust to be damaged or destroyed recently. The fire wiped out a 3-week-old permanent exhibition on the oppression of Jews during the Third Reich. It came 10 days after Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin visited the exhibit, becoming the first Israeli head of government to visit a German concentration camp.

The barracks is the only surviving structure among dozens of wooden barracks that the camp's Nazi commanders set aside for Jewish prisoners.
