Provo Mayor Joe Jenkins says he has spoken with gubernatorial candidate Mike Leavitt about serving in Leavitt's Cabinet should the Republican win Nov. 3, but Jenkins says he has not spoken with Gov. Norm Bangerter about a state position.
"I have never talked to Governor Bangerter about that one wit," Jenkins said Wednesday. Bangerter and Jenkins served in the Legislature together in the early 1980s.Jenkins has been rumored as the next director of the Utah Department of Community and Economic Development, now headed by Stan Parrish, who may be headed back to private industry.
Jenkins said he might be interested in working in a Leavitt administration. The two have not discussed a specific position, Jenkins said.
"There's a lot of things that have to transpire between now and January," Jenkins said. "We'll have to see."
For now, Jenkins said he's staying put. "At this point, I still plan to spend one more year as mayor of Provo," he said.
