Jon Huntsman Jr. was sworn in Aug. 28 as the new U.S. ambassador to Singapore.
Surrounded by family members, Sens. Orrin Hatch and Jake Garn, Gov. Norm Bangerter and Salt Lake Mayor Dee-dee Cor-ra-dini, Hunts-man, 32, was sworn in by U.S. District Judge Bruce Jenkins as the youngest U.S. ambassador.Huntsman was confirmed by the Senate on Aug. 7 after successfully passing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
"He is a bright, driven and accomplished individual whose strong international background and talents make him eminently qualified to assume this post," Garn said.
Huntsman was senior vice president for international affairs at Huntsman Chemical and served as deputy assistant secretary of commerce in East Asia. He served an LDS mission in Taiwan and speaks Mandarin Chinese fluently and several other dialects.
