A polar bear mauled and killed an 11-year-old boy who had been teasing the animal with a stick at a zoo in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov, a news agency reported Friday.
The report by ITAR-Tass did not say when the incident occurred. The news agency said the boy was visiting the zoo without his parents when he climbed on the polar bear's cage and "began to annoy it with a stick."
The bear rose to its feet, pulled the boy down with a paw and began to tear him apart, the report said.
Firefighters and police shot the bear four times before it let the boy go and allowed rescuers into the cage, the agency said.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died. ITAR-Tass said it was not known whether the animal would survive because its wounds were serious.
