LARGE NUMBERS TURN OUT FOR LEBANESE ELECTIONS

The third and last phase of Lebanon's general elections, the first since 1972, concluded Sunday in southern Lebanon with a high turnout by the Shiite community who viewed it as another phase of their struggle against Israel.

Ballot boxes closed at 5 p.m. in the districts of Sidon, Tyre and Nabatiyeh.Officials sources said the turnout was high in southern Lebanon in sharp contrast with the election's first and second phases in eastern and northern Lebanon Aug. 23 and Beirut and Mount Lebanon Aug. 30.
