A veteran local PTA leader will square off against a former municipal official in the November election to gain a seat on the Nebo School Board.

According to final but unofficial vote totals, former Genola Mayor Brent R. Laker likely will face an uphill battle opposing Kaye Westwood for the Nebo School District Precinct 1 seat. Current board member Bill White opted against running again for the four-year position.Westwood, a Spring Lake resident who has served on several of the district's committees, including its strategic planning board, captured nearly half the votes in the primary, which trimmed the field of four candidates to two. Laker, the manager of the BYU Bookstore, received nearly one-quarter of the votes.

Homemaker Carolyn Hunt received 16 percent of the votes, and computer artist Steven Keele got a little more than 10 percent of the tallies in the race that covers half of Payson and the remaining south county communities - Genola, Goshen, Santaquin, Spring Lake and Elberta.
