Morris East of the Philippines won the WBA junior welterweight title today by stopping champion Akinobu Hiranaka of Japan in the 11th round of their scheduled 12-round fight.

Referee Carlos Berrocal halted the bout at 1:47 of the 11th round when a thunderous left from East knocked Hiranaka into a sitting position.At the time the fight was stopped, judges Rodolfo Maldonado of Panama, Chalerm Prayadsab of Thailand and Yuh Wan-soo of South Korea all had Hiranaka ahead by one to three points.

The loss was his second in 22 fights, 18 of which he won with knockouts.

East, only 20, improved his record to 15 victories, including 10 knockouts, against two losses and one no-contest in his four-year career.
