House races to watch in November:
- When Speaker of the House H. Craig Moody launched his unsuccessful bid for Congress, he opened the door for Democrats to win his House District 48 seat in traditionally Republican Sandy. Because of reapportionment, the Democratic candidate will be Rep. Kurt Oscarson, while the Republican candidate is newcomer Dan C. Simons.- Rep. Richard Bradford had hoped to run for a House leadership position. But his loss in the Republican primary in House District 49 makes that race a free-for-all. Russell A. Cannon, a Republican, will now face former Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Chabries, the Democratic candidate, and Chris Eskelson, a Libertarian.
- In Springville, former Rep. Glenn V. Bird, a Democrat, is seeking to reclaim the seat he lost to Republicans several years ago. His opponent will be Rep. J. Brent Haymond, R-Springville, who has been linked to the Bonneville Pacific bankruptcy scandal.
- In District 71 in San Juan and Grand counties, Democrat Dan Nakai will try to become the first Navajo elected to the Utah House. He will face Republican Lyle R. Anderson.
- In District 39 (Taylorsville-Bennion), Democratic candidate Joanne Fraser, a Granite School District teacher, will try to unseat Rep. Michael Waddoups, a Republican, in an area that is increasingly Democratic. Democrats are convinced they can win.
